All the teams and their support crews brought their boats down to the river this morning. There were lots of spectators wandering around, including several kindergarten classes who had been brought down to see the racers. Everyone wanted to talk to Louise about the super cool kayak that she built.
Meanwhile, the racers were packing their gear, going through last-minute inspections ...
... and doing whatever they had to to get ready for the race.
The boats were lined up by the river in order by team number.
We all headed to the start line in the main square of Whitehorse, where the Minister of Sports made a speech. All the racers had to run a mile to their boats before getting in the water. And the race was officially on.
The spectators and support crews cheered on the paddlers as they left the shore.
We watched Synthia and Louise pull into the middle of the pack and start gathering speed. Then they disappeared around a bend of the river.

They had to run a mile just to start.. oh man!!!
Inquiring minds want to know what you are doing while the kayakers are kayaking...
Do they have to run a mile at the end too?
Hi Elizabeth--
Please tell everyone 'Hi' and 'Good Luck' from the Manor Road bunch--and from Ruth and Joe, too!
Just think--if the race were held in January instead of June, you could use ice sleds with sails! (Wouldn't that be cool!)
Love,
Dick and Sarah Hamlin
