Before the race, the gear had to be inspected to make sure that Synthia and Louise had everything they would need for a safe trip. Here Jake oversees the inspection while Synthia and Louise put on their team numbers. Their team number is 73, and their awesome team name is the Dangerous Turtles.
Then I got to see the kayak for the first time. Louise spent two months building it from a kit, and it looks great.

It's a long, thin boat ...
... but not too long and thin, because race regulations prohibit that. Here the boat inspector and his son are measuring the kayak. We passed all the inspections.
And the kayak is ready for the race.

Wow-- Louise should get a medal just for making that kayak! It is beautiful!
That is such a beautiful boat. She should hang it over her mantel after the race! (Next to her finisher's medal, of course.)
