Birthday in Dawson City

On the morning of my birthday, I woke up to the sun sparkling on the Yukon River ...

... and ravens chuckling in the branches of the spruce trees.

We drove for almost five hours through the mountains of the Yukon ...

to get to Dawson City, where we are staying in this hotel.

With its raised wooden sidewalks and dirt streets, Dawson looks like the Old West.

It seems like a theme park -- Gold Rush Land --

-- but the old buildings are real, and the town has an incredible history as a center of the Gold Rush.

Some of the buildings have been beautifully restored ...

... and from a mountain above the town, you can watch the sun hit the horizon and rise back up, providing summer days that never end.
