Yesterday David and I celebrated the foundation of Rome. The traditional founding date is April 21, but we moved it to accommodate David's exam schedule. I'm sure the Romans wouldn't have minded.
I made lunch from this classical cookbook, which isn't that authentic, but does have very delicious food. Our Roman meal included celery-leek soup and a dish like baked polenta, but made with chickpea and fava bean flour. And it was gluten-free.
If there is one thing Tallahassee loves, it's a parade. When Jennifer was visiting, we saw bagpipers and belly-dancers heading to the St. Patrick's Day parade (of course), and while my parents were here, we managed to avoid this massive event. (Although I am sorry I missed the squid float!)
When Morris, John, and Ann were visiting, we all went to check out the Greek festival.
Everyone in Tallahassee seemed to be there.
We had a delicious lunch of homemade tiropita, spanakopita, orzo, green beans, and pastitsio.
And we saw some Greek folk dancing. Dancers of all ages dressed up in brightly colored costumes and danced in a line, stepping in time with one another and raising one foot up.
It looked exactly like the dances you see in ancient Greek art, like this votive relief of Hermes and the nymphs from the sixth century B.C.. You can only see traces of paint, but these dancers were once wearing brightly colored costumes too.
This weekend I tried to see all of my friends before I leave town. David and I had dinner with Fox, TammyJo, Tom, Emilie, and Derek, and then drinks with Kate and Ruben.
