Crimpin' Ain't Easy

Now that cold weather is here (well, sort of cold), I've been wanting to eat winter squash and pies. This recipe for butternut squash pasties combines them both.

Pasties are a traditional food from Cornwall, usually filled with meat and turnips. The Cornish miners would take these little pies down into the mine for a hearty and portable lunch. I tried to make the pasties with the traditional crimping method seen in this video, which is much harder than this woman makes it look.

Most of the pasties turned out weirdly misshapen, although fortunately one of them came out beautifully crimped and photographable. I found that they were still delicious, and that they still made the perfect lunch for a long day on campus. (Also, they made me feel grateful not to be eating a turnip pie in a mine.)
